Rented a tent, a tent, a tent… well, actually, a yurt

yurt

Me? I prefer a Roomba to keep my yurt clean. Yeah, they break all the time, but it’s so great to sit back with a cup of tea while a robot cleans your floor (and then rolls out under the canvas because it’s just a freaking tent, what the hell?).

Note: this post not sponsored by iRobot, but I totally would let them. I love my Rosie so very much. Doo-dee-doo-dee-doo-dee-dooooo! BEEP BEEP BEEP!

Loveliest comment, by Vivian: Is it just me, or does the yurt look a bit like the face of a grumpy little old man with bushy white eyebrows, and his mouth open to yell “Hey, get off my lawn!!”? Hm?

Kids would so totally love to have that as a playhouse. On the other hand, the monthly rental for this is approximately equal to the monthly mortgage on my condo. On the OTHER hand, it’s in the Carribean!

nope, it totally is saying “RRRRAAAAAAAAAA!” in a monstery fashion. i think it is angry at being called a tent. i like the hoover sentry at the door to stop dirty intruders

    do-do-do-do-DO-DO charge!
    My roomba is named Lola.

  3. The contact person on this is “Capt. Buck” and the listing clearly states that the rental is of a room or a yurt, so I am completely confused. Is there a room that is separate from the yurt? Is it all a question of semantics? Oh, and if you can pay your way there is the possibility of bartering.

    • Vivian says:

My interpretation there was that he has two things to rent– a room inside his house, and the tent/yurt outside. I guess you get your pick, or whichever is unoccupied when you apply.

  4. I don’t care if it’s a tent! For the opportunity to slip out the canvas door and plunk my tootsies in the sparkling blue waters of the Caribbean…? I think I have a spare ovary I could barter…

Definitely not a yurt! A yurt has a circumference fence type thing for the sides with radial arms creating the roof. This has tension poles for support, therefore it is a tent.

And why is the vacuum on the outside?

I definitely wouldn’t want to visit there during a hurricane!

I agree, that definitely not a Yurt, to be a Yurt is has to have a wooden frame and straight sides, that’s just a large dome tent.

Glad to know I’m not the only one who can’t see the word “tent” without thinking of Vonnegut!

I may be missing something, but for $650.00 (which is what the monthly rent is advertised as being), couldn’t you buy a fairly nice tent, all your own? I know there are other costs, my husband is a big fan of camping (and I tell him I hope he has a great time each time he goes), but is ground that sparse in the VI?

Can you not just sling your own tent into whatever is taking you to the beach and accomplish the same thing?

I imagine there are not many places where you can set up camp and LIVE for weeks or months on end. Certainly not where you have access to a bathroom and kitchen. Don’t forget, you’re paying the homeowner for sharing those, as well as the actual living space in the tent. I’m also guessing you get electricity and water for that, and didn’t it say something about internet access?

I’ve never been to the Virgin Islands, but I know that in the US, places with even primitive unlimited free camping are pretty rare.

  8. You name your robot vacuum too?? Our roomba is named Francis Albert.

  9. Layla says:

Is anyone else thinking that a vacuum is just not going to cut it with as much sand as there is on a tropical island?

  10. marte says:

I shouldn’t think it is a good idea to describe your neighborhood as ‘breezy’ when trying to rent out a tent…

I believe I’ve said it before, but it’s worth saying again: I love this blog! :D

  12. oobie says:

Uh, I’m 99% sure that this is a joke. It appears to be a tent/yurt/temporary home in use at Burning Man, complete with “ironic” vacuum. Just a theory.

    Boooo Shu-dah! Jabba the Yurt

Yurt: the sound my cat makes when a slimy puddle of something disgusting is about to land on the bedspread.
