No, really, they're called "studettes." Tee hee hee.

Ah, the French. So sophisticated. When American landlords offer bathrooms to live in, they’re just ratholes like this one. But look at this “studette” Maï found! Check out the swank shower curtain, and the skylight! Imagine the delightful dinner parties you could host, the sparkling conversation… until one of your guests needs to use the bathroom, and things suddenly become rather awkward.

Good god. Next to that New York bathroom/studio from a while back this is the most depressing apartment I’ve ever seen. Don’t get startled in the middle of the night and try to sit up in bed, by the way!

  2. Mid-C Frank says:

Toilet is out in the hall (most likely shared) — so not quite as dreadful as that ridiculous (and illegal) listing in NYC.

  3. Melissa ~ Wife to 1, Mom to 5 says:

Look at all the floor space! Room for Chair(s).

  4. Alissa says:

The good news is that you won’t have far to go to get to the bathroom when you wake up in the middle of the night. The bad news is that you will have to crawl at least part of the way to get there.

Mid-C Frank, that actually makes the listing more revolting. Or maybe it is just equally revolting. Either way? Yes, yuck.

God in heaven, if your life has come to sleeping in a bathroom because the rents are too high in a city? Pick a different city. Really. Doesn’t matter what country you are in, if you are sleeping in what is basically a restroom, no way is the city worth that.

That’s the way people incarcerated for dreadful crimes live. Try not to emulate them.

no toilet? you know the last tenant probably used the shower instead… ew.

  7. Kit says:

I wouldn’t live in either of those bathrooms, but I’d live in a bathroom if it was cheap enough (and private). Save my money to go out all the time except collapsing.

    Nice and clean!

Nice and bright and clean. Simple, Feng Shui living for the urban exhibitionist without unwieldy possesions.

OK, my French is almost non-existant, but it looks like this thing is for *sale* for 54,900 Euros! I can’t even imagine paying OVER 76K for that! Even if it is only 5 mim. to the Champs Elysees. I’d hate to be just starting out trying to find a home in that city.

hm ok i actually LIVED in one of these. quite cosy, apart from sharing the toilet with everyone else on the same floor, and having to walk about 7 floors cause there is never an elevator, i really loved it.
    no, really. loved it.

Maybe the rest of you are neater than I am, but with just that plastic curtain the carpet would be soaking wet after one of my showers. Then it’s squish squish to the bed.

    • Michael says:

Don’t worry – the water pressure isn’t going to be high enough to spray water all over the place. All the hot water will be used within minutes of everyone getting up, so you will be trying to use as little cold water as possible.

That’s an attic apartment – some friends renovated a French farmhouse. Their water boiler is in the basement while the bedrooms and bathroom are in the attic level. All the rooms have lie-ins, where the roof slopes into the room.

When my friends and I studied abroad in Paris most of us lived with host families. However, one girl chose not to, and she was put into a room like this one…didn’t know until now there was a special name for what it was. Anyway, the toilet was a communal one in the hallway. Let’s just say it was NOT a fun place to visit.

  14. Wally says:

Matching pillow and shower curtain – nice!

Sure would cut down on those impulsive Costco purchases.
